Dearth Of Infant Wear Filling Stores’ Racks
Monday, April 27th, 2009    Subscribe To Our FeedWalking through any store and the numerous styles and colors of available infant wear can be staggering. Even in discount stores, there are varieties of clothing for newborn babies that seem to scream out to be bought, and most will match the personality of the infant, or at least the personality as perceived by the parents. Even t hose without children or expecting a new arrival can be found looking through the racks in infant wear, chuckling about some of the humor added to the selection.
Perhaps there has never been a time when the selection of infant wear grew as fast as during the baby boomer years, from 1946 to 1964. Some of the designs may seem tame compared to today’s standards, but more and more colors were included in infant wear as well as many new styles. The development came in response to the vast number of children born during that time, and today many are grandparents, touring the available selections, remembering the clothing they had as children.
Some of the brands of infant wear are specific to individual stores and there are also many specialty shops that only care their own type of clothing for children. Even some of the famous adult clothing designers have expanded into putting their name on a separate line of infant wear so the parents and baby can wear clothing bearing the same label.
Some See Gender Disparity In Clothing Lines
As debatable as the subject may be, some believe there is a disparity of the number of designs available for girls and boys. Many claim that the choice of baby girl clothing is far more extensive than boy’s clothing, and point to the number of colors and designs hanging in the infant wear department as proof of their argument. Some claim it is due to how boys and girls behave differently, while others say the designers are more prone to selling to the mother of the child.
Whatever the reason, infant wear is rarely considered appropriate for both boys and girls, even for newborns, the division of the genders seems to be apparent when it comes to the displays of available infant wear. Many parents concede that there are far fewer ideas for designing infant shirts and pants for boys than there are for dresses for infant girls. Besides, very few fathers will look at a pair of jeans for their infant and wish it was covered in butterflies like the dresses in infant wear for little girls.
